MANILA, Philippines - It’s Showtime! hosts Vice Ganda, Anne Curtis, Karylle, Amy Perez, Ryan Bang and Jugs Jugueta cannot deny having personal favorites among the contestants of the show’s singing talent search Tawag ng Tanghalan (TNT) yet pushing for their choices is impossible. They know the process of selection and elimination is done and weighed through the verdict of panel of hurados and approval of madlang people.
Amy, during last Tuesday afternoon’s presscon for TNT, said that there are a number of contestants they hope to reach in the concluding part of the competition that is set tomorrow, March 11, at Resorts World Manila.
Vice, on the other hand, said it cannot be helped to have a favorite but they never fail to recognize each contestant’s excellent vocal talent. “Wala kaming pinupuri na isa lang, pinupuri namin silang lahat.”
Although Karylle’s choice didn’t succeed until the grand finals week, she is certain that hopes are high that her bet will carve a niche in the music scene given his numbers of supporters who believe in his singing ability. “He even guested in my concert,” shared Karylle.
Anne revealed her two favorites gave their best during the Resbak round.
But whether or not their personal choices land in the top contenders list, they all agree that anyone among the 10 grand finalists deserves the title of Tawag ng Tanghalan grand champion.
The 10 finalists competing in the week-long Ang Huling Tapatan round in order to earn a spot in the Top 5 are Noven Bellaza of Negros Occidental, Froilan Canlas (Camarines Sur), Maricel Callo (Pagadian), Mary Gidget dela Llana (Laguna), Marielle Montellano (Cebu), Pauline Agupitan (Batangas), Carlmalone Montecido (Bacolod), Sam Mangubat (Batangas), Rachel Gabreza (Makati) and Eumee Capile (Bulacan). They were divided into two groups and started the face-off last Monday. Every day, one winner will be declared after a face-off but the winner on Friday will only be announced on Saturday. As we put this story to bed, Noven, Froilan and Carlmalone are the winners in the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday face-off, respectively.
Direk Jilmer Dy shared that the week-long grand finals is part of the contest’s many twists and surprises. “We want to keep it exciting because one year and two months natin itong sinubaybayan and of course, we want to make it grand. Actually on Saturday, there are surprises o panggulat na mangyayari and you have to watch out for it. We cannot deny about having personal favorites but the finalists are salang-sala talaga at ‘yung proseso na papunta sa (grand) winner ‘yun ang pasabog.”
Asked if the hosts always agree with the decision of the judges, Vice replied in the negative and added, “We don’t really have to agree with them every day, we just have to respect everyone every day.”
For her part, Amy said they have to respect the decision of the hurado “because they have the credentials to sit as hurados to begin with and we all have high respect for all of them.” She quipped that she has no right to oppose the judges’ decision because she is not a singer “at dati lang ako na-link sa singer, hahahaha.”
As a singer herself and also a member of the jury panel, Karylle said the choice also depends on the taste. “That’s why there are five judges who have different tastes so I think it also depends on the day since there were days that all contestants were excellent kaya may mga araw na nanghihinayang kami kasi only one could win.”
Karylle continued, “We (the judges) disagree with one another sometimes and we discussed our choice as well mahirap talaga ’pag may magaling na dalawa pero minsan it boils down to taste kung ano ba favorite mong kanta o favorite style; iba-ibang tenga, iba-ibang panlasa.”
Anne believed in the choice of the judges. “Like the madlang people, iba din ang panlasa nila sa panlasa ng hurado so parang we speak with the rest of the nation when it comes to agreeing and disagreeing with the judges. It’s a hit and miss talaga kung sino yung gusto nila sa gusto namin.”
Jugs, who is tasked to interview the non-winners with Teddy Corpus, said it is tough to talk to them “because all are emotional after the result so what we usually do is give them pointers or tell them straight their mistakes like flat ka dito o anuman.”
It is no secret that Nora Aunor and Edgar Mortiz, who both achieved popularity in showbiz, are products of Tawag ng Tanghalan. Will the grand champion of It’s Showtime!’s TNT also succeed in becoming part of the local entertainment scene?
“I personally think na merong sisikat ng bongga and it does not have to be the grand champion alone. Kahit sa hindi mag-champion, meron akong nakitaan ng star value,” answered Vice.
It’s Showtime!’s Tawag ng Tanghalan grand champion will receive a P2M cash prize, a house and lot from Camella, music package from JB Music, negosyo package, recording package from Star Music and a trophy.
(It’s Showtime! airs Mondays to Saturdays on ABS-CBN.)
