‘Basyang’ downgrades to tropical depression after making landfall

MANILA, Philippines — After making a landfall over Surigao del Sur, tropical storm Basyang (international name: Sanba) has weakened into a tropical depression Tuesday morning.

In its 11 a.m. weather bulletin, state weather bureau PAGASA said the center of "Basyang" was last seen in the vicinity of Cantilan, Surigao del Sur. 

It packs maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 75 kilometers per hour. 

All areas previously under tropical cyclone warning signal number two have been downgraded to signal number one:

  • Palawan including Calamian and Cuyo groups of islands
  • Aklan
  • Capiz
  • Antique
  • Iloilo
  • Guimaras
  • Negros Occidental
  • Negros Oriental
  • Siquijor
  • Bohol
  • Cebu
  • Biliran
  • Leyte
  • southern Leyte
  • southern section of Samar 
  • southern section of Eastern Samar
  • Dinagat Islands
  • Surigao del Norte
  • Surigao del Sur
  • Agusan del Norte
  • Agusan del Sur
  • Camiguin
  • Misamis Oriental
  • northern section of Bukidnon
  • Lanao del Norte
  • northern section of Lanao del Sur
  • Misamis Occidental 
  • northern section of Zamboanga del Norte

Tropical depression Basyang, which is estimated to move west northwest at 25 kilometers per hour, will leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility Friday morning. 

“Scattered to widespread moderate to heavy rains will prevail in the next 24 hours over Palawan, Visayas, Caraga, Northern Mindanao and Zamboanga Peninsula. Meanwhile, scattered light to moderate with at times heavy rains are expected over Bicol Region and the rest of MIMAROPA and Mindanao,” PAGASA said.
