MMDA repairs Leyte Landing memorial
Mike Frialde (The Philippine Star) - November 29, 2013 - 12:00am

MANILA, Philippines - A contingent from the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) repaired yesterday the Leyte Landing memorial in Palo town, which was damaged by Super Typhoon Yolanda.

MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino personally led his men in re-erecting the felled statue of Filipino statesman Carlos Romulo, which was left unattended for 20 days after the onslaught of the typhoon.

â€œThis historical monument should not be neglected. By restoring this, we hope to inspire the people of Leyte to rise again,” Tolentino said.

Romulo’s statue is one of six bronze statues comprising a tableau that shows the historic landing of Gen. Douglas MacArthur in 1944.

Tolentino said the MMDA is humbled to be the first to restore the damaged memorial. The initiative was part of the agency’s repair and rehabilitation efforts in typhoon-damaged areas in Eastern Visayas.

The MMDA sent its first rescue and relief units to Tacloban City and Samar on Nov. 10, two days after Yolanda’s onslaught. To date, the MMDA has 304 men doing relief work in the devastated provinces.

The agency also sent equipment and relief goods and worked with local and international agencies in rehabilitating damaged communities.
