Wife of slain Batangas anti-drug cop seeks Duterte's help

BATANGAS, Philippines — "He may not be a hero in the Marawi war but he is our hero in the Batangas drug war."

These were the words uttered in between sobs by Kermenchita Bejer, wife of anti-drug cop PO3 Roman Bejer, who was killed by suspected drug syndicate in Batangas last June 16.

In a letter addressed to President Rodrigo Duterte, Kermenchita, a housewife, appealed to the chief executive for help in attaining swift justice for her husband's death.

"Napakabait po niyang asawa, responsableng ama at maipagmamalaki ko ang kanyang pagiging tapat na alagad ng batas at ang matinding dedikasyon sa kanyang sinumpaang tungkulin," Kermenchita said

PO3 Bejer left five children to his wife namely Dennis, 14, Sheina, 12, Roman,10, Cigen, 4 and one-year-old Jhon.

"Sana po ay matulungan ako ni Pangulong Duterte para maitaguyod ko ang pag-aaral ng aking mga anak," 37-year-old Kermenchita said.

PO3 Roman Bejer, 41, a resident of Barangay Matingain, Lemery, Batangas, was driving home using his motorcycle when still unidentified gunmen shot him several times, killing him instantly on Friday evening.

The officer, who was assigned at the Agoncillo police station, had visited his relatives in Barangay San Vicente and was cruising on the highway on his way home when armed men waylaid him upon reaching Barangay Sinala around 10:30 p.m.

Bejer's brother, lawyer Mar Bejer, said the shooting may be related to the officer's job as he had arrested several drug pushers and users during his 19 years of service as police officer.

"Hindi niya nagawang magpayaman galing sa ilegal na droga. Nangungutang pa yan sa akin para lang may panggastos sila sa bahay," Mar said.

The lawyer said he even bought an owner type jeepney for his brother as he cannot afford to buy one for his family.

"Hindi rin nagtagal ang jeep niya kasi ibinenta nya para lang may maipang-tustos sa.pamilya nya," Mar said.

He was even mocked by his co-policemen and tagged him as "Mr. Straight Man" for refusing numerous bribes from drug suspects he arrested, Mar added.

"Matagal akong naging fiscal dito sa Batangas pero kailan man hindi lumapit sa akin yan para magpatulong na aregluhin ang hawak niyang kaso lalo na sa droga," Mar said.

The lawyer added that his brother was recently offered with P1 million and a Toyota Innova in exchange for not testifying in court against a drug suspect but the policeman declined.

Public Information Officer Senior Inspector Hazel Lumaang, in an interview, said she was vouching for Bejer's dedication to his job.

"Upon our verification, he was never involved in any illegal activities especially on drugs while serving his term as an intelligence officer," Lumaang said.

Lumaang said the slain cop has high conviction rate on his arrests against drug users and pushers.

"He even managed to get a life imprisonment conviction against a drug pusher he arrested," a police officer said.

Meanwhile, a special task group was formed to handle the case of Bejer's killing.

His internment will be on June 24, 2017 before 12 noon at Christian Memorial Park in Barangay Palanas, Lemery Batangas.
