DOH advice to control temper: Keep calm, have space, think before getting angry
(The Freeman) - March 21, 2017 - 12:00am

CEBU, Philippines - To control one’s temper, a medical officer from the Department of Health (DOH)-7 advised people to always think carefully before saying or doing anything that they might regret along the way.

Nurse Emmalyn Fernandez, Mental Health Focal Person of DOH-7, said anger management involves three main components which are thinking, emotions and body.

“A person should have proper integration of thought and conduct which is one of the criteria of a sound mental health,” she said.

Recently, a scion of a known businessman family figured in a “road rage” incident that showed him shooting a 33-year-old nurse Sunday dawn.

Fernandez also offered some common tips for one to be able to manage one’s temper: (a) take a time out; (b) have some space; (c) calm yourself first before expressing anger; (d) identify solutions to the situation; (e) don’t hold a grudge; and (f) practice relaxation skills.

However, some instances drive people to act violently that are influenced by both internal and external factors.

Fernandez said these internal factors include: personality problem; stress and mental problem.

The external factors, on the other hand, include environmental triggers and use of alcohol and drugs.

Cebu City Police Office Director Joel Doria said road rage is common but not all are reported to the police.

He said the road rage involving nurse Ephraim Nuñal and David Lim, Jr. Sunday dawn along F. Sotto Street in Barangay Kamputhaw, Cebu City was the first incident reported to their office.

“So far, ito yung na-monitor.  Hindi ko lang alam sa highway patrol group kung meron silang other details. Pero so far, dito sa Cebu City, ito pa lang,” he said.

Doria is still waiting for the victim’s formal complaint, while they have already alerted the security personnel at the airport and seaports to prevent the suspect from leaving the city after the shooting incident.

Presidential Assistant for the Visayas Mike Dino has confirmed in a press statement that Lim will surrender today to Police Regional Office-7 Regional Director Noli Taliño. — May B. Miasco, Christell Fatima M. Tudtud (FREEMAN)
