In San Remigio: Half of drug surrenderers won’t get training
Brenda D. Batuto (The Freeman) - March 21, 2017 - 12:00am

CEBU, Philippines - Half of about 800 drug surrenderers in San Remigio, Cebu who have completed the community-based treatment program cannot proceed to its livelihood component as they did not get the required certification from the Department of Health (DOH).

Carmen Remedios Durano-Meca, head of the Cebu Provincial Anti-Drug Abuse Office (CPADAO), said the second stage in the treatment program is for drug surrenderers to take vocational courses offered by the Technological Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA).

However, graduates of community-based treatment program will need to be evaluated by the DOH.

Those who passed the standards of the DOH’s framework will be given certificates for them to enroll in TESDA for the livelihood training component.

According to Meca, of almost 800 drug surrenderers in San Remigio town who finished the community-based treatment program, only half passed the DOH standard and were given certificates.

The local government of San Remigio is now coordinating with CPADAO for assistance regarding actions or programs for those who did not pass the DOH standards.

To date, San Remigio is the only town whose graduates of the treatment program have been evaluated by the DOH.

Meca added that the cities of Bogo, Naga, Danao, and the town of Argao are among local government units in the province that await DOH’s evaluation. (FREEMAN)
