CEBU, Philippines - Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu scored its second straight win while the University of San Carlos recorded its first in the SBP division of the 32nd SBP Passerelle Twin Tournament backed by Milo at the Lux Oriens Gym of SHS-Ateneo de Cebu in Canduman, Mandaue City.

In games that followed similar trending, the Magis Eagles defeated Don Bosco Technology College Inc., 43-29, while USC cruised to a 45-29 win over Southwestern University-PHINMA.

SHS-Ateneo started tentatively, taking 12-4 and 18-8 leads at the end of the first and second quarters. They then pulled away in the third quarter behind Dylan Lim’s six points for a 29-16 lead.

Big men Stephen Joash Cutamora and Kristian Michael Porter took over in the fourth quarter, combining for nine points to stretch the lead and settle the outcome. Porter led the team with nine points while Cutamora had eight. Sid Reroma led Don Bosco with 12.

It was a case of “slowly but surely” for USC as they steadily took control of the game before sealing the win in the second half. After a slow start and a 6-4 lead at the end of the first quarter, USC built a 24-16 halftime lead before finally streaking to a 35-18 lead by the end of three periods, limiting the Baby Cobras to only two points in the period.

Kyle Garet Cabahug led USC with nine points as Nash Cabradilla led SWU-PHINMA with 12. In the SBP division team standings, SHS-Ateneo is now 2-0, followed by idle UV (1-0), USC (1-1), SWU-PHINMA (0-1) and Don Bosco (0-2).

The 32nd SBP Passerelle twin tournament backed by Milo is the country’s longest-running nationwide tournament for the Under 15 and Under 12 age groups. The Cebu champion will qualify for the Visayas Regional Finals which will be played in Iloilo October 7 to 8.

The Visayas champion then plays against other regional champions in the national finals in December. (FREEMAN)
