Cry for justice for slain lawyer Mia intensifies

TAGBILARAN CITY, Philippines —The cry for justice for slain lawyer Mia Mascarinas-Green is getting louder following the launching on Friday the "Hustisya Para ni Atty. Mia Kalinaw sa Bohol" movement, held at a hotel in this city.

Convenors of the movement–consisting of members of academe, professionals, religious and professional groups, and representatives of other sectors–said they would not stop until the perpetrators of the daytime murder of Mascarinas-Green are punished.

They said they disagreed with the claim of the law enforcers that the "case is solved," because the police only identified the suspects but miserably failed to arrest them.

The convenors initially pointed out that the movement will serve as "pressure group" demanding for accountability of those responsible of the murder of the lawyer. All of them then signed up their respective commitment to the movement's cause.

They also clarified that the group, aiming for a peaceful Bohol, will not only end up seeking justice for Mia but also to be concerned about all other killings in the province. Details how to go about it are still hazy as the group is still on the planning stage, they said.

The launching started with the singing of one of Joey Ayala's best songs "Walang Hanggang Paalam," said to be the favorite of Mascarinas-Green, and ended up with the singing of the Bohol Hymn.

Former Divine Word College Student Affairs director Linda Paredes gave the rationale of the group and Mia's sister, Jojie Mascarinas-Vestal voiced the family's thirst for justice, while Father Fernando Po shared his thoughts and feelings on Mia's death.

Among those who attended the launching were former student leader Kid Caneda, Judge Raul Barbarona, Batuan Mayor Dodo Jumawid, HNU Professor Marianito Luspo, Bong Bullecer, and Doris Obena, among others.

Baclayon town Councilor Eric Canete, also an HNU professor, presented the song he composed "Song For Mia" with Mia's cousin Meo Mascarinas providing the musical accompaniment, and then the group sang together the Beatles' song "Imagine." (FREEMAN)
